Summer New Instructor Workshop – July 22-24, 2026

Please note that this Workshop will be located at Flint Hills Technical College, Emporia, KS

Limited to 50 participants. 

  • July 22nd – 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
  • July 23rd – 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • July 24th – 8:00 AM to 2:45 PM (included with full seminar enrollment, can be done separately)

The New Instructor Seminar is designed specifically for individuals from business, industry and healthcare who are beginning their role as an instructor, but all post-secondary teachers are welcome. The focus of the seminar is on improving instructional planning for the classroom/lab and improving the execution of instructional strategies to increase student learning.

Course Outcomes:

  • Construct one complete lesson plan
  • Build effective competencies (using Bloom’s Taxonomy)
  • Develop memorable and clear lesson introductions and summaries
  • Generate oral questions for student engagement & learning
  • Create teaching strategies to aid students in developing competence
  • Discuss the creation of a positive classroom learning environment
  • Practice teaching the completed lesson plan

July 24-Course Planning/Semester planning

The third day of the workshop is will focus on faculty wanting to learn more about planning out a semester. Planning courses and coursework is an essential part of what makes curriculum work. Many CTE instructors struggle with writing good performance objectives, breaking down tasks into manageable bits and developing good lesson plans

 What to bring along to the seminar:

1) A textbook or curriculum materials from one of the classes you are assigned to teach

2) A syllabus from one of the courses you are responsible for teaching

3) Laptop computer (MUST HAVE a computer for seminar participation and completion)

4) Attitude of learning and active engagement in seminar activities

5) Casual clothes. (We want you to be comfortable for the seminar!) The temperature in the room is cool, layers are recommended if you get cool!

 

Please park in the South parking lot that is located behind the main Metcalf Building. The back doors to the conference room will be open and one of our facilitators will be there to greet/direct you!

 Lodging information/options:

 There is a block of rooms reserved under KCWE New Instructor Workshop at Hampton Inn.   $144 per night, you must reserve by June 30 to receive that rate.
